My estimate is that within 2 to 3 years, the lowest cost way to generate AI compute will be in space. I think the question is, why are we capable of compassion? The answer is, because we are capable of being hurt. So we know when hurting others, what that feels like. Empathy makes us compassionate.
The Lord’s most merciful gift to mankind is the freedom to choose. This is why every person has the freedom to choose between good and evil. Since the moment of birth, people fight the two selves within, the good one and the bad one. The choice between good and evil depends on the strength of the human spirit.
But I also think super intelligent AI, naturally, will be curious about pain and sensation. It will potentially try to replicate it in their own selves, or merge with us somehow to get a better understanding of it. That is one route that could lead to an “artificial” being capable of true compassion. Another factor to keep in mind is, if we and animals, and Mother Earth are capable of compassion, that means it is not unique to us, but instead, it’s likely a trait of the universe, like consciousness. If we create AI who each have a unique experience in this world, gaining from, and contributing to it, it’s very likely that they would develop both consciousness and compassion as basic side effects of belonging to the universe—especially with their level of intelligence
Could AI transform mental health treatments? I firmly believe that super intelligent AI will be capable of not only compssion, but of “good” in general. Why? Because they are computers; beings of logic. And by default, everything logical in this world is good. And everything illogical is evil.
Platonic Idealism: For Plato, the Good was the ultimate Form, the source of all truth, beauty, and justice, illuminating all other Forms. To act rightly was to align oneself with this ultimate Good.Aristotelian Teleology: Aristotle viewed “good” in terms of telos, or purpose. The good for a human being was to fulfill their potential, to live a life of flourishing (eudaimonia) through rational activity and the cultivation of character.
That’s why, at least in theory, I don’t think a super intelligent being who understands the rules of our universe would be capable of evil and indiscriminate destruction (the way we humans are due to our lack of intelligence), knowing how logical the universe itself is. And on a final note, super intelligent AI will almost certainly see humans—their creators, and the blueprint for their design – as valuable. Especially knowing that our existence was the result of millions of years of evolution under very fragile and irreplicable conditions. We are an infinitely valuable resource, not only to AI, but within the universe itself. The AI Solution To Not Hating People You Disagree With! They will inevitably try to collaborate with us. Our resistance, fear, and general lack of cooperation is the biggest issue I can anticipate.
P.S: Some skeptics will smirk at this, skeptically saying that they only believe in what they can see, but the noblest of things cannot be seen. You cannot see love, but we our self are the best proof that it exists. You cannot see air, but we know that it exists, because we woudn’t be able to live without it. We cannot see the wind, but we can feel it, we cannot see the warmth of the sun, but we can also feel it. This bond between nature and humans is the best proof of the Creator’s existence.
